"The Beast" was the code name given to the AI movie alternate reality game by its puppetmasters. According to Elan Lee, when an estimate of the amount of images needed to create the intended sites resulted in a total of 666, the name popped into being and firmly stuck.

It was produced by a small group at Microsoft, known as "The Hive." Some members of The Hive later went on to form 4orty2wo Entertainment, which produced the immensely popular ilovebees promotion for the Xbox videogame, Halo 2.
